As Dominica journeys to resiliency, the government
also commits on moving towards a world-class healthcare system. With this being
the main focus, construction work is ongoing on the much-talked-about Marigot
hospital amidst the threat of the unprecedented Covid-19.
The government of Dominica has ventured into a new
agreement with Montreal Management Consultants Est. (MMCE), to build the new
Marigot Hospital.
Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit, said three
firms tendered, but the contract was awarded to a firm out of St Lucia – Construction
and Industrial Equipment Ltd (CIE). Construction started in late February and the
structural work is envisaged to be completed by July 2020.

On Wednesday [April 29] CIE completed a million-dollar pour - the largest amount
of concrete [1000 cubic yards] at any one time, in the country, on the Marigot
Hospital. The Prime Minister told reporters,
“We are pushing these projects. This is why we allowed some constructions to
take place, respecting the social distancing to ensure that people can be
employed.”
When it comes to work ethics, safety, and professionalism, Mr Gajadhar and by extension CIE Ltd, are second to none within the region. Therefore it was not surprising when the Dominican Prime Minister had kudos for our esteemed Team leader.

Prime
Minister Skerritt had special praise for Mr Gajadhar. “ I want to specifically recognize
the contractor Rayneau who has been maintaining high quality and high professionalism
on the site – one can see it, and taking into consideration the safety of all
those who work here and all who come on the site. I want to commend Rayneau for
this.”
According to the health Minister Kenneth Darroux, “The
hospital structure will consist of 3 male wards, 3 female wards, 2 children wards,
we will also have an ICU with dialysis facility, accident and emergency section, a dental section, the lab section, pharmacy section, CT scan room,
accommodation for staff, a health education room etc. It is a massive structure
with all the different aspects of the health care system going to be available
at this hospital.
He continued,
“I really want to thank God and I really want to continue to pray to God that
he will continue to grace us with that blessing because we knew that it was
always going to be a challenge to build a new hospital on an existing site, and
so far I must report that things are going very smoothly.”
New Marigot Hospital upon completion
Upon completion, the $32M,55,000sq ft.,3-floors (2 floors at 20,000sf each and 1 floor at 15,000sf with a concrete roof),45-bed
capacity hospital will provide complete medical facilities to the residents of
Marigot and nearby places. Essential services include Ambulatory Service Unit,
Emergency Care, Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Maternity and Pediatric Unit,
Laboratory and Radiology Services and Trauma Centre.
To date, work is presently taking place on the first
floor as excavation works and site clearing have finished.
